Event Report: Big Data, Smart Cities & Urban Research Infrastructure
On 5th May, the Urban Big Data Centre hosted a seminar with Professor Robert J. Stimson, Senior Academic Advisor (and former Director) of the Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network (AURIN), a pioneering figure in the urban research field, who has played a leading role in major developments in urban research infrastructure in Australia.
The event started with a welcome and introduction by Professor Piyushimita (Vonu) Thakuriah, Director of the Urban Big Data Centre, who highlighted Professor Stimson’s key career achievements over a span of 49 years. View Professor Stimson’s one page bio (PDF 0.1MB).
In his talk, “Big Data, Smart Cities and Urban Research Infrastructure” Professor Stimson provided an overview of developments in information technologies and the opportunities presented by these innovations, focusing on how building new research infrastructures are starting to revolutionise the way urban and regional research might be facilitated through a number of initiatives occurring around the world, including several examples from AURIN.
The UBDC is developing a close relationship with AURIN and will continue to work together in the future to advance the field of urban research infrastructure, methods and analytics.
